Chapter 2: The Footage They Thought No One Would See

Chapter 2: The Footage They Thought No One Would See

Claire and the baby were stable.

The doctor told Owen they needed observation, rest, and time.

It was not the dramatic answer he wanted.

He wanted someone to promise that everything would return to normal.

But nothing about that night could return to normal.

Not after he saw Claire lying on the floor.

Not after he heard her call Dr. Rowan “Uncle.”

And not after he finally understood how long she had been asking him to see what Serena was doing.

While Claire rested under medical supervision, Owen sat in a security office with Dr. Rowan, the hospital’s legal counsel, and a detective assigned to review the incident.

Serena sat across the room, no longer smiling.

The first video was simple.

A camera above the suite door showed Serena entering alone.

It showed Claire already inside.

It showed Serena moving closer.

Then the camera angle shifted.

The side table.

The fall.

The broken glass.

The moment Serena stepped forward.

The detective paused the video before the image became too difficult to watch.

“That is enough,” Dr. Rowan said.

Owen’s hands tightened into fists.

Serena swallowed.

“She was provoking me.”

The detective looked at her.

“By standing in a room?”

Serena said nothing.

Then the security director opened a second file.

“This was recorded in the service corridor fifteen minutes earlier,” he said.

The footage showed Serena walking toward the private suite.

But she was not alone.

She was with Gavin Mercer, Owen’s chief financial officer.

The man Owen trusted with the internal numbers of Vale Holdings.

The man who had attended family dinners.

The man who had assured Owen that Serena was simply “trying to protect the company from distractions.”

On the video, Gavin touched Serena’s hand.

Then kissed her.

Owen’s stomach dropped.

But the affair was only the beginning.

The audio was clear.

“She is getting suspicious,” Serena said.

Gavin glanced down the hallway.

“Then make it look like she is unstable.”

“She is pregnant.”

“That helps,” he said. “Everyone already thinks she is emotional.”

Owen stared at the screen.

Serena’s voice followed.

“Once she is out of the picture, he will sign anything.”

Gavin smiled.

“He has been signing whatever I put in front of him for years.”

The room went silent.

Owen looked at Dr. Rowan.

Then at the detective.

Then back at the screen.

The affair was not just betrayal.

It was part of a plan.

For months, Gavin had pushed Owen to restructure parts of Vale Holdings. He had suggested new trust arrangements, new executive authority, and a “temporary” transfer of voting rights while Owen prepared for fatherhood.

Serena had been feeding him information from inside Owen’s home.

Conversations.

Travel plans.

Claire’s fears.

Her medical appointments.

Anything that could help them paint Claire as fragile, irrational, or unfit to question the people around Owen.

And in the middle of it all was the baby.

Not as a child.

As a legal obstacle.

Dr. Rowan opened a folder.

“There is something you need to understand,” he said.

Inside were documents from the Rowan Family Foundation.

Claire’s late mother had created a protected trust years earlier. It was meant to support children’s medical programs, but Claire had been named a co-beneficiary and future trustee.

When Claire’s child was born, he would receive a protected interest in the foundation as well.

That meant neither Owen’s company nor anyone around him could pressure Claire into signing away certain rights or assets tied to her family’s legacy.

Serena and Gavin had discovered the structure.

They had also discovered that Claire had refused to sign a document Gavin presented three weeks earlier.

At the time, Owen had barely noticed.

Now he understood why Serena had become more aggressive.

Claire was not merely Owen Vale’s pregnant wife.

She was the one person standing between Gavin and Serena’s financial scheme.

Serena looked at Owen.

“I did it because I loved you.”

Owen’s expression hardened.

“No,” he said. “You did it because you thought I would never look closely.”

She began to cry.

But no one moved toward her.

No one offered comfort.

The detective requested her phone.

The hospital counsel preserved the footage.

Gavin’s access to Vale Holdings was suspended before midnight.

And Dr. Rowan made one decision clear:

“No one who endangered Claire or her child will be allowed to hide behind reputation, wealth, or family connections.”

Later that night, Owen went upstairs to Claire’s room.

She was awake, though pale and exhausted.

He stood near the door for a moment, afraid to come closer.

“You were right,” he said.

Claire looked out the window.

“That does not fix it.”

“I know.”

“You believed other people when I told you something was wrong.”

“I know.”

“You treated my fear like inconvenience.”

Owen’s voice broke.

“I know.”

Claire finally looked at him.

There was no anger in her eyes.

That was worse.

There was disappointment.

“I did not need you to fight everyone for me,” she said quietly. “I needed you to believe me before I had proof.”

Owen lowered his head.

Outside the room, security officers escorted Serena down the quiet hospital corridor.

The gala downstairs had ended.

The flowers were still arranged in the ballroom.

The champagne was still chilled.

But the lies behind the celebration had already begun to collapse.
