Chapter 2 – A City Built on Millions of Dreams

Only ten years had passed since the end of World War II, but New York looked unstoppable.

Factories across America fueled an economy unlike anything the country had ever experienced. Office buildings stretched higher into the sky, department stores welcomed record crowds, and Wall Street had become the financial heartbeat of the Western world.

Every morning, millions poured into Manhattan.

Some were veterans rebuilding their lives after returning home from Europe and the Pacific.

Others were immigrants who had crossed oceans believing New York offered something no other place could—another chance.

Some arrived with university degrees.

Others carried only a suitcase.

Yet when they stepped onto these sidewalks, everyone became part of the same enormous machine.

The city rewarded ambition.

But it demanded everything in return.

Someone was struggling to survive.
